Herjolfsnes Challenge

Herjofsnes No. 63, Vol. 1

Olen päättänyt ottaa osaa Neulakon pitäjän, Elinan luomaan Facebook-haasteeseen. Sen tarkoituksena on valmistaa jokin Grönlannin keskiaikaisiin löytöihin perustuva vaate. Valitsin 1300-luvun lopulle ja 1400-luvun alulle ajoitetun napitetut miehen takin. Alkuperäinen takki on säilynyt kohtalaisen hyvin. Se on valmistettu 2/2 villatoimikkaasta. Alkuperäinen väri on ollut todennäköisesti musta, mutta monen muun maalöytötekstiilin tapaan sen nykyinen väri on ruskea.

I decided to take part in in a Facebook challenge, created by Elina from Neulakko. The idea is to make a garment that's based on the medieval garments from Greenland. I chose to to make the man's buttoned coat, that's dated to the end of 14th and the beginning of  15th century. It's made of 2/2 twill. The original colour was propably black(ish), but like many archeological tekxtile finds, it's has turned brown.

Tekemäni takki ei ole suora kopio alkuperäisestä: työn alla oleva takki perustuu Medieval Garments Reconstructedin kaavaan M-kokoon, joten siitä tulee hieman suurempi kuin alkuperäisestä (alkuperäisen mitat löytyvät S-koosta). Olen myös lisännyt kokonaispituutta muutamalla sentillä ja pidentänyt hihaan, sillä takin saaja on yli 180 senttinen. Myös väri vaihtuu, sillä tästä tulee vihreä.

The coat I am making is not an exact copy or reconstruction of the original: it is based on the medium size pattern in Medieval Garments Reconstructed, so it will be slightly larger than the original (the original measurments are used for the S-size pattern). I have also lenghtened the lenght from shoulder to hem as well as the length of the sleeves, since the wearer is over 180 cm tall. Also, the colour will be different, because mine will be made of green wool.

Herjolfsnes D10594 tai No. 63. Herjolfsnes D10594 or No. 63.

I will also add a lining, although apparently the original wasn't lined. In this case the lining is necessary, since it's supposed to serve as a winter coat. Beacause of the postal strike here in Finland I will have to wait for the green wool a bit longer. Luckily, the lining fabric is from my own stash, so I can start to sew it while I wait for the strike to end.

Vuorikangas on 100% villatoimikasta, jonka kude ja loimi ovat eriväriset. The lining fabric is 100% wool twill. Here you can see the different colours of the warp and weft.
